When We Met

Macie and I first met online. While I (Nick) was living in La Mirada, CA, with the Virgin Islands post–college, some of my single friends decided to sign up for dating apps. It didn’t take long for me to join the bandwagon. Bumble, Hinge, Coffee Meets Bagel… none of them did the trick. It wasn’t until I downloaded a Christian app called Crosspaths. I created a profile and it didn’t take long for me to spot the very pretty, joyful, exotic–looking girl, Macie LeLaCheur. Immediately, I was drawn to her smile and goofiness. So I clicked the heart and we were a match! Then I continued to make sure she was a real human. I messaged her and found her favorite food was Italian. Then I made a reservation at Centanni’s in Burbank. It was September 9, 2019 I was early for the reservation and very nervous to meet her. The moment I saw her, I thought she was beautiful. I gave her a gift: apple juice. Our date from there was amazing. We bonded over John Mayer, Missions trips, and the enneagram and the night lasted much longer than I expected. I had nothing but good feelings for this woman.

When She Fell in Love

I knew I really liked Nick the first time we went to the movies. He has a very loud, hilarious, and contagious laugh. He apologized for laughing so much during the movie and I remember thinking that I loved his sense of humor and the fact that he was always so ready to laugh. The day that I knew I loved him was during an afternoon spent at a hundred–year old church in Pasadena. The courtyard of this church is beautiful with a lot of flowering trees in the Spring. I took him there for a picnic one Sunday and as we talked about our hopes for the future, I realized that I wanted him in mine. I started to think about all of the things that I love about Nick: his love for the Lord, his sense of humor, his generosity, his optimism and the fact that is willing to put up with all of my animals. Since that day, I continue to love him more and more as he proves himself to be the kind of man that I always dreamed of marrying. I am so grateful that he always champions my dreams and drives me to be the best version of myself. I love the life we have built together and am excited for our future!

When He Fell in Love

It was a normal day in La Mirada, laying on our white used couch in the living room. I was on the phone with Macie. After going on several dates, I knew I wanted to meet the rest of her family and friends that were living in Michigan, thinking to myself, if the opportunity arises within the following year, I would probably do it. But it happened to be right then and there when that opportunity arose. I was working my dayjob on my own schedule and so was she. On a whim, we said “let’s go.” So at that moment we decided and booked our tickets to Michigan. And it was at that moment that it hit me like the bass at a live concert rumbling through my body. I realized “woah, I just spent hundreds of dollars to go on a trip with this girl to see her hometown with her.” I had fallen in love. And honestly, it’s really hard to sum it up in one moment because there have been several moments like that one. Macie and I had been dating for only a few months when John Mayer announced his tour dates. The moment I found out about the tour, I knew I wanted tickets for my birthday. So naturally, I bought two. One for me, one for… I didn’t know yet. It wasn’t much later when I found out who that was. Macie and I were making our way through the Americana, a mall in L.A. She told me that she was thinking about getting tickets to the John Mayer concert, when I thought to myself, “do it!” So I did. “I got tickets. You wanna come with me?” I said with the biggest smile on my face. I remember my smile was big because my face muscles were hurting. And… she didn’t even believe me. I told her I was serious. And she FLIPPED. “Are you sure?” she kept asking me. “Yes.” I was positive. I knew her love for John Mayer surpassed many others’. These were 2 of many memorable moments that continue to build on the love I have for Macie.

When He Knew

It was July 25, 2020. And at this point I started to imagine my future and I couldn’t imagine my life without her. She had driven down from Santa Clarita and we went out to have a picnic in–n–out lunch. We wanted to celebrate my new job so we tried going to Downtown Disney, but it was extremely full because Disneyland was closed due to the pandemic, so we improvised and went to the Old Spaghetti Factory. It was such a simple day. And I remember feeling at ease. Like knowing tomorrow is going to be a good day. I remember after our dinner telling her how important she was to me and that I want to move forward and do life with her. She knew exactly what I meant and shared the same feelings and desires.

When She Said YES!

I have to admit that I knew that Nick was going to prose that day. He is the worst liar I have ever met and his excited nervousness gave it away. We started the day with good food and a trip to Malibu. Nick and I walked out to Point Dume to look out over the ocean. While we were enjoying the view, Nick went down on one knee…to tie his shoe. He thought that this was very funny. I did not. He told me that we had dinner reservations at a nice restaurant and headed back towards the city.

When he pulled into the parking lot of the beach, I was very confused. We walked up to a beautifully decorated table underneath a tree covered in hundreds of hanging photos of us. Nick’s friends, Cody and Sam, came out of nowhere and served us our meal. After dessert, Nick pulled out his laptop and started to play a video he made of our relationship set to a song hat he had written and recorded about the way he sees me. I immediately started to cry and was overwhelmed with gratitude for the way that he loves me so well. This video is one of the sweetest things anyone has ever done for me.

The video ended with Nick asking me to marry him. He took me aside, got down on one knee and I said yes! After I said yes, I heard cheering from further down the beach and knew then that our families were there. We started walking towards them and I saw that the people we love most were there to celebrate with us. I was so surprised to see Morgan and Anthony had traveled all of the way from Michigan to be there! This day that Nick planned with our family and friends is my favorite memory to date. The thoughtfulness and extensive planning that he put into this day made me feel incredibly loved.
